Decoding the Power: Choosing the Right 24V LED Driver
You’ve chosen the perfect LED strip and the right aesthetic profile—now it’s time for the most critical component: The LED Driver (also known as the power supply).
The driver is the heart of your system. Choosing the correct size and type is essential for safety, reliable performance, and the longevity of your investment. A mismatched driver is the number one cause of LED strip failure and flickering.
At Ultimate LED’s, we focus exclusively on 24V Constant Voltage systems, a standard that provides superior performance for longer runs and minimizes voltage drop. Our “architectural insight” ensures that every component works in harmony. Here is our simple, real-world proven guide to selecting the perfect driver for your project.
Step 1: Calculating the Wattage (Power Requirement)
You need to know how much power your strip light installation will consume in total. This is a simple formula based on the length of your run and the wattage per metre of your chosen strip:
Total Strip Wattage=(Strip Wattage per Metre)×(Total Length in Metres)
Example Calculation: If you have a Pro-Grade 4000K LED strip that consumes 14.4 Watts per Metre, and you plan to install a 5 Metre run:
14.4W/m×5m=72 Watts
Step 2: Applying the Ultimate LED’s Safety Margin
To prevent your driver from overheating, ensure maximum lifespan, and allow for fluctuations in power supply, you must never load the driver beyond 80% of its stated capacity.
This is a crucial Ultimate LED’s standard for “real-world proven” reliability.
- Driver Wattage Required = Total Strip Wattage×1.25
- (The 1.25 factor accounts for the 20% safety margin)
Continuing the Example:
Required Driver Size=72 Watts×1.25=90 Watts
In this case, you should choose the next standard driver size available in our range, which might be a 100 Watt driver.
Step 3: Selecting the Right Driver Type and Feature
Since all our drivers are 24V Constant Voltage, your final choice comes down to placement and functionality:
| Driver Type | IP Rating | Installation Environment | Core Feature |
| Standard | IP20 (Non-Waterproof) | Indoor, dry areas only (inside ceilings, cabinets, electrical boxes). | Non-Dimmable: Ideal for simple switching or when a dimmer is not required. |
| Sealed | IP67 (Waterproof) | Wet or damp areas (bathrooms, under outdoor eaves, exterior fixtures). | Non-Dimmable: Required for durability where moisture is a concern. |
| Dimmable | IP20 or IP67 | Both dry and wet locations (must match IP rating). | Essential for Mood: Integrates with our smart controllers for smooth, flicker-free light adjustment. |

The dimmable drivers are essential for integrating with our Smart Controllers (Link to Smart Controllers category) and unlocking the full functionality of your CCT or RGBW strips.
The Ultimate LED’s Driver Difference
We only supply high-quality 24V Constant Voltage (CV) drivers rigorously matched to our LED strip range. Using a cheap, unverified power supply will often lead to light flickering and a dramatically shortened life for your high-quality strip light.
